Today’s newsletter features Museu das missões. Located at São Miguel, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, the museum for the Brazilian missions was designed in 1937 by architect Lucio Costa. Built in 1940, the complex is a Unesco World Heritage site since 1985. In São Miguel’s museum were collected pieces of the other seven Brazilian missions settlements.

Lucio Costa determined that this one was the site that should bring together the mixed heritage that show the work of the missionaries and the indigenous people. With existing columns and other pieces he designed a simple shelter with a colonial roof, and after a first period of time he added the subtle glasses. His master work shows his awareness and constant balance between tradition and modernity.
