Paulo Mendes da Rocha - Gerber House, Angra dos Reis RJ, Brazil |
||||||||||||||||||||||||
Revisiting Modernism is one of our working areas. But what if nobody visited the project before? It was the case for this house by Paulo Mendes da Rocha; completed more than 40 years ago it remained forgotten, and hence unpublished. Designed for the engineer Ignácio Gerber, the house looks at the sea of Angra dos Reis, and is the only Mendes da Rocha´s work in Rio de Janeiro state.

Supported by only four concrete central pillars and sit on a big rock, this project exemplifies Mendes da Rocha´s way of understanding structure and space. The cantilevered concrete ceiling projects the space, blending architecture and landscape. Almost hidden is the basement, a cool space among the existing rocks.
